Our History
The French Broom, also known as the balai demi-tête, has a rich history in France dating back centuries. Originally only available to the bourgeois households due to its more complex design, the broom became more widely popular with the emergence of factories during the Industrial Revolution. These factories were capable of supplying artisans with the materials in the quantities necessary to sweep all the households in France!
Our story began before the Second World War when Auguste Domergue created his artisanal broom workshop. With the postwar economic boom, the workshop grew more and more successful. However, the 1990s presented a new challenge with the influx of cheap imports flooding the market. Despite this, the workshop remained steadfast in their commitment to quality and sustainability, choosing to continue manufacturing in France. They also focused on innovation, constantly developing new products and improving our manufacturing processes to stay ahead of the competition.
At The French Broom, we are always looking for new ways to improve our products and processes while maintaining our commitment to quality, sustainability, and respect for the craft of broom-making. When Vianney Boutry, our founder, moved to the United States, he was surprised by the lack of a "balai demi-tête" and decided to partner with Auguste Domergue's workshop to continue the french broom legacy by bringing the finest quality brooms to America. Together with his son, Max, they established a new chapter of The French Broom, sharing sustainable, high-quality, beautiful brooms with the world.
We are proud of our history and legacy and remain committed to our founders' vision of creating brooms that make cleaning a pleasure. Thank you for joining us on this journey as we continue to strive for excellence in everything we do.
